Why Rayas?

Château Rayas is unlike almost anything else in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. While the appellation is famous for heat, galets roulés and powerful blends, Rayas is planted on unusually fine, sandy soils, with much of the vineyard facing north and surrounded by woodland. The estate focuses on Grenache, producing a lighter, more perfumed and elegant expression that is frequently compared with Burgundy rather than conventional Southern Rhône.

The estate's scarcity is equally important to its reputation. Production is tiny, yields are exceptionally low and releases have historically been deliberately slow. Emmanuel Reynaud, who took over Rayas in 1997, favoured late harvesting, long élevage and minimal publicity, helping turn Rayas into one of the world's most elusive and sought-after wines.

Reynaud sadly passed away in November 2025. His death marked the end of an important chapter for the estate and has naturally brought renewed attention to both his legacy and the finite supply of wines produced during his tenure.

Investment Fundamentals

Rayas has been one of the principal drivers of the Rhône's recent recovery. WineFi's Q3 2026 analysis shows the Rhône up 2.7% over the last 12 months, with the Reynaud family's wines, Rayas, Fonsalette and Château des Tours, accounting for 46.8% of the region's gain. Excluding them, the Rhône returned just 1.7%. To see how the Rhône compares with other regions, read our guide to the best wine regions for investment.

The recovery in Rayas prices had already begun before Emmanuel Reynaud's death, but the move accelerated afterwards as collectors and investors reassessed the scarcity of wines produced under one of the Rhône's most influential winemakers. This is a pattern occasionally seen following the death of highly regarded producers, where a finite body of work and renewed focus on their legacy can increase demand for existing vintages.

Across 26 Rayas vintages and 1,075 trades, Château Rayas changed hands at prices 17.0% higher in the six months following late November 2025 than in the preceding six months. For comparison, the same six-month periods a year earlier showed a 5.4% increase.

Individual vintages have moved considerably faster. The 2011 Château Rayas rose 23.9% over the last 12 months across 105 trades, illustrating both the renewed demand for Rayas and the wider preference currently being seen for mature Rhône wines.

Insider Vintage: 2015

Our current pick is 2015 Château Rayas, selected from wines screened using the WineFi Investment Score (WIS).

WineFi's latest market data puts its lowest list price at £9,799, against a TruePrice of £11,205, representing a 12.5% discount to our current fair-value estimate. It also carries an average critic score of 97 points and a 5/5 global liquidity score.

This combination of quality, scarcity and relative value, the hallmarks of investment-grade wine, makes 2015 particularly interesting: investors gain exposure to one of Rayas' strongest modern vintages without paying the premiums currently attached to several older vintages, while retaining the collectability and limited supply that underpin the Rayas market.
